Protect against the Zika Virus and West Nile Virus

We can all agree that we love warm weather, but with warmer weather comes those pesky insects.

They are a nuissance and their bites are ithy and irritating; sometimes it is enough to make you head back indoors and not enjoy a day outside.

In addition to that is the concern of the West Nile Virus and the most recent Zika Virus.

In May of 2015, the Pan American Health Organization issued a health alert regarding this most recent Zika Virus infection in Brazil.

The outbreaks led to reports of the Guillain-Barre Syndrome occurring in pregnant women giving birth to babies with birth defects as well as poor pregnancy outcomes.

There have also been cases reported in the United States.

So what do you do? Live in FEAR?? No!!  Of course not!!  There are ways to continue enjoying the outdoors.

One way to protect yourself is by wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants and socks. Also stay indoors from dusk to dawn when mosquitos are at their peak biting hours.

But who wants to do that?  Not me.  Summer is to be enjoyed with friends and family.  Hiking, biking, picnics!

Instead use EPA approved Bug Guard.

The EPA recommends DEET free Bug guard

The centers of disease control and prevention suggest using insect repellent products that have been registered with the US Environmental Protection Agency.

DEET, Picaridan, IR3535 and oil of lemon eucalyptus are all EPA registered ingredients and are certified to help prevent insect bites that could lead to West Nile virus, Zika Virus or other illnesses.

Most insect repellants out there are loaded with toxic chemicals.  DEET being one of them, which is a pesticied.

So poisonous that even the Environmental Protection Agency says you should wash it off your skin when you return indoors, avoid breathing it in and not spray it directly on your face.

One of the most serious concerns of DEET is it’s effect on the central nervous system.

The good news is that Avon has a line of products that are DEET free.

Avon bug guard is an EPA registered insect repellent that has been around since 1999.

It’s deet free and has a variety of formulas. It has been proven to be effective as S.C. Johnson’s OFF!! Which contains DEET!!
