Finding A Fragrance

Finding a fragrance without going to a department store and sampling all of the fragrances is possible if you know what kind of fragrances you prefer.

Looking for a signature fragrance or do you like a variety (like I do)?

For more than 130 years, Avon has stocked popular perfumes for women, and built a reputation for its fragrance gift sets and men’s cologne.

Finding a Fragrance at half the cost

One way to try fragrances at a fraction of the cost is to try the fragrance in a lotion if it has one.  Not all fragrances have a lotion, but if they do, it is a great try it before you buy option.

NOTE: for a longer lasting all day fragrance use the shower gel, the lotion and your perfume.  It won’t be overwhelming, just long lasting.

Avon fragrance historyFinding a Fragrance Do’s and Don’ts
  • DO Keep fragrances away from extreme heat or cold
  • DO apply directly to skin focusing on pulse points.  Allow your body heat to develop the fragrance in order to get a true impression.  Inside of the elbow is a good testing area.
  • DON’T spray to close to the skin!  To avoid dripping or too heavy of an application, spray 6 to 7 inches away.
  • DON’T leave opened fragrances unused. Once opened fragrances will begin to fade and change over time.
  • DON’T forget to spritz your hair and clothes which will hold the fragrance long after application.

Notes that combine in perfect harmony to make a fragrance

Did you know that fragrances are composed of notes?

There is a top note, which is the note you initially smelled when you sprayed the perfume; they make up 20 to 40 percent of the blend.

The middle note takes up 40 to 80 percent of the perfume mix and becomes more noticeable after the top note fades.

Then there are the base notes.  These are the longest lasting of the trio and help boost the staying power of the other notes.

Finding a Fragrance – make it last

Wanting a fragrance that lasts?  Choose a parfum over a toilette.

Eau de Parfum is a bit more intense, luxurious and fuller than an Eau de Toilette. The main difference is the amount of perfume oil in the formula: an Eau de Toilette contains less perfume oil and more water and alcohol than an Eau de Parfum.

Make it last even longer by layering with shower gel, body lotion and then the perfume. Otherwise, spritz every 3 to 4 hours.

NOTE: Dry skin does not hold fragrance as long as oily skin. Hydrate with a moisturizer after a shower or before application.  Use an unscented moisturizer if you do not have one that matches the fragrance you are using.

Finding a Fragrance – the best place to apply

Because fragrance rises you will want to apply from toe to tip – knees, wrist then neck.

If you want it to be subtle simply spritz 6 to 7 inches into the air and walk throught the fragrance.

Why does my perfume smell differently then it did before?

Because our body chemistry can change with diet, stress, pregnancy and menopause; the fragrance can smell slightly different.

To get the most out of your fragrance keep in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.

It is best to not keep your fragrances in the bathroom where they are exposed to humidity from showering which can cause oxidation of your favorite fragrances and change the notes.

Fragrance will fade and change over time; so, once you have opened a fragrance, use and enjoy.

Finding a Fragrance testing

Test no more than 3 fragrances at a time.  Your sense of smell can get overwhelmed and will make it difficult to find a fragrance.

NOTE: before trying more fragrances try smelling coffee beans first; this will clear the palette.

When testing a fragrance make sure you are not wearing any fragrance. Spritz inside your wrist one time then wait about 20 seconds before smelling by gently waving it under your nose.

Wait another 30 minutes to smell again to see if the scent is right for you.

Finding a Fragrance – other uses
  • Try spraying on damp towel-dried hair before combing it.
  • Spritz a bit on your bra before putting on in the morning.
  • Spray pantyhose from waist to knees.
  • Dab a few drops on a light bulb; the heat will diffuse the fragrance.  Just a DAB will do.
  • Saturate cotton balls and let dry then tuck in pillowcases or any other creative place you can think of.  Perhaps a sock or lingerie drawer. (scented soap is also good to use in drawers).
  • Wood holds scent.  Try spraying a bit on the underside of furniture .
  • Spray undersides of rugs.
  • Dab on radiator vents.
  • Spray on artificial flowers or on some petals and place the petals in drawers, purses etc.
  • Spray fabric hangars in your closets.
