Hope for Women suffering Domestic Violence
All of us has been in contact with a woman who has suffered domestic violence. We may never spoke to her or know her name, but I am sure that we have all been in the presence of an abused woman and may or may not have known it.
There are not always signs of abuse. There don’t need to be bruises and scars to show the suffering. Domestic violence can be verbal and not physical abuse. The suffering can be covered with a smile and a presence of contentment. Some women don’t even recognize the abuse. Some believe they brought it on or some how deserve it.
As we approach Mother’s Day, and look to celebrate all moms, we are reminded of the essential work that still needs to be done to give every woman and child a chance to survive and lead healthy and prosperous lives far from domestic violence.
There is hope for women suffering domestic violence – In 2004, Avon Foundation for Women launched its Speak Out Against Domestic Violence program which has funded emergency shelters across the U.S. to provide safe places for women and children in danger. These are places women and children can heal emotionally and physically as well as move towards a self-sufficiency and positive coping skills.
Avon has partnered with Sanctuary for Families for a special limited-edition Empowerment Tote. The image on the tote was painted by a child residing with his mother at an Avon Foundation-funded domestic-violence shelter in Brooklyn, NY. The image depicts a family tree, filled with hope. To learn more about Sanctuary for Families, visit www.sanctuaryforfamilies.org.
The painting features a large, colorful tree with many branches – symbolizing the children’s family tree, filled with hope, healing and growth. Funds raised from the new Empowerment Tote will be donated by Avon to the Avon Foundation to be able to provide more grants for more programs that provide critical services for women and their families.
Domestic violence continues to be a major barrier to the social and economic empowerment of women and one in three women worldwide will be a victim of domestic violence in her lifetime.
If you would like to help support those women and children suffering from Domestic violence; you can purchase the Printed canvas tote HERE. $3.60 will be donated to the Avon Foundation to fund programs to end violence against women.
