Avon fragrance history

When you think of fragrances does Avon come to mind.  Avon Fragrance history dates back to the early 19th century with fragrances that have stood the test of time.

Continuing that fragrance history with new scents that are long-lasting and memorable.

Fragrances leave an impression, cause a reaction and accentuate your personality and emotions.  Creating a moment in time. A positive response and ultimately, a memory.

Those moments, that positive response.  Sharing our personality and exuding confidence through fragrance is what makes us want to wear them.

Avon fragrances history dates back to 1886 when Avon Founder David H. McConnell, a bookseller turned perfume entrepreneur.

As a book salesman David made fragrance samples to serve as door openers when he traveled from home-to-home.

During his selling he made a very important discovery. He found that his female customers were more interested in the perfume samples he offered than the books he was selling.

In the early 19th century McConnel offered women a chance at financial independence. The opportunity to create and manage their own businesses through what later became known as direct selling.

In 1886, McConnel came across a women named Mrs. Albee who became his first representative and the Avon company was born.

Avon was originally named the California Perfume Company and started selling fragrances as their first product.

Some fragrances have been around for decades.  Dating back as far as 1973 with Sweet Honesty.  While new ones are being created and becoming new favorites for many.

Science of Fragrance

Fragrances are compiled of three main notes. A top note, middle note and base note.

Top Note: Forming the first initial impression of the fragrance is perceived immediately upon application and is noticed within the first 5 minutes.

Middle Note: Called the “heart” note. This is the scent that emerges in the first 30 minutes to when the top note dissipates.

Base note: Brings depth and solidty to a fragrance.

The middle note and the base note are what bring the main theme of a fragrance scent.

A fragrance concentration refers to the strength that a fragrance has. These concentrations are broken up into what is known as Eau de Cologne, Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum.

Fragrances with a higher concentration, containing more perfume oils and less alcohol would be known as an Eau de Toilette or Eau de Parfum.

A lower concentration fragrance containing a higher amount of alcohol can cause the fragrance to fade faster over time.

An example of this can be an Eau de Cologne.

How to wear fragrances properly

Spray or dab, don’t rub. When rubbing a fragrance into your skin or hair you can create friction causing the fragrance to become dull and slightly change. Always spray or dab to preserve the quality of the notes when applied.

When in doubt; hydrate. Fragrance wears the best when applied to your skin, but not all skin is equally hydrated. To have fragrance last longer apply a thin layer of moisturizer after a shower or before applying.

Choose a powerful base note. Want an alluring, invisible quality about you? Try using a fragrance with vanilla, oud or cedarwood.

How to store fragrance properly

Keep closed until first occasion of wear.

The more oxygen the more fragrance will diffuse and change over time. Exposing fragrance to oxygen can cause the scent inside to dilute and become oxidized.

Store in a dark and dry place. Humidty and water damage will destroy a fragrance, effect the fragrance quality and cause unwanted chemical reactions to occur. Such as change in scent and fragrance color.

I noticed a change in my fragrance collection after keeping them in my bathroom.  Due to the humidity from showering, I now know why my favorite perfumes no longer smell the way they did when I purchased them.  After replacing them all, I now keep them in my bedroom where it is dry.

When traveling opt to go with a travel size or purchase a portable mini refillable perfume dispenser.

Fragrance Dos and Dont’s
  • DO Keep fragrances away from extreme heat or cold
  • DO apply directly to skin focusing on pulse points.  Allow your body heat to develop the fragrance in order to get a true impression.  Inside of the elbow is a good testing area.
  • DON’T spray to close to the skin!  To avoid dripping or too heavy of an application, spray 6 to 7 inches away.
  • DON’T leave opened fragrances unused. Once opened fragrances will begin to fade and change over time.
  • DON’T forget to spritz your hair and clothes which will hold the fragrance long after application.
